Trauma Therapy and PTSD Treatment
Many of the clients I see who engage in people-pleasing or perfectionism have also experienced trauma in their lives. This trauma can take a variety of forms; sometimes it’s physical or sexual abuse in childhood. Other times, it’s an assault that occurred in adulthood.
Often what they’ve experienced does not feel dramatic, so they may have never even thought of it as trauma. This is often the case when people’s parents were not capable of meeting their emotional needs and they had to grow up far ahead of schedule. Bullying from other kids in school, past (or current) emotionally abusive relationships, and the sudden loss of a loved one are just a few more examples of trauma that my clients have faced.
Although these traumatic experiences may appear very different on the surface, their impacts can be remarkably similar. Whether the trauma was a one-time event or went on for years, more often than not, it can be hard to regain a sense of safety and trust in the people around you.
Symptoms of Trauma and PTSD
Sometimes, trauma leads to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This shows up in the form of flashbacks, always being on guard, zoning out, or losing track of time, to name only a few symptoms. But even in cases where PTSD did not develop, a trauma history can create numerous challenges, including:
Anxiety and depression
The need to maintain rigid behaviors - often in the areas of eating and exercise
Intense fear of abandonment - or conversely fear of intimacy and commitment
Using drugs, alcohol, shopping, or spending excessive time online to numb feelings
Outbursts of anger or frequent irritability
Social withdrawal
Trauma Therapy and PTSD Treatment Can Help
If you have experienced trauma in your past - or are beginning to suspect that you have - you’ve likely been struggling for a while now. As a trauma therapist, I understand that asking for help can be hard enough. But, the thought of sharing some things that have happened to you can be even harder. At my therapy practice in Washington, DC, I practice from a trauma-informed perspective. This means I prioritize creating a safe, therapeutic environment and a trusting relationship with each of my clients.
In trauma therapy and PTSD treatment, I strike a delicate balance between giving my clients space to process difficult feelings, while also ensuring that treatment is not re-traumatizing. You can be assured that you will set the pace of our work together. Additionally, I will give you the tools to stay grounded if difficult feelings arise.
Together, we will work on developing new coping strategies to replace those that are no longer serving you. My goal is to help you emerge from a lifetime of shame, fear, and self-doubt with a greater sense of empowerment and ease.
